Top tips on how to look and feel confident

by Ronita Dutta

Looking good isn’t just about the clothes you wear, it’s about how you feel about yourself on the inside and how others perceive you. Try these easy steps to boost your body confidence and set you on the right path to looking and feeling great.

1. Think positive

It may sound obvious but a positive attitude is infectious. Instead of obsessing over your saggy bum or wobbly tum, learn to celebrate your body. Think of the bits you like most – that could be your gorgeous bust, your shiny hair, your sexy eyes or something else entirely. The point is to embrace your individuality and banish all negative thoughts. If you think you look good, then others will too.

2. Smile

Not only does a smile look more attractive than a scowl, there’s scientific proof that smiling releases feel-good brain chemicals known as endorphins which promote a sensation of well-being and contentment.

3. Walk Tall

If you hunch your shoulders and avoid eye contact you’re inadvertently sending out bad body image signals. Pull up through your upper torso, push your shoulders back and keep your head held high. Your upright posture and will not only make your clothes look better on you, but will also make you look thinner. Bonus!

4. No Comparison

Stop comparing yourself with celebrities and models. Remember, the glossy images you see in the media are a clever illusion. We’d all look fantastic with a bit of styling, some clever make-up and a bit of air-brushing.

5. Accessorise

Worried about your muffin top? Use accessories to detract attention away from your least favourite features. Oversized sunglasses, a statement bag or a fancy hair accessory will all deflect attention from the bits you’re keen on hiding by accentuating those you love.

6. Treat yourself

No matter how busy your schedule, always make time for a little pampering. Treating yourself to a DIY manicure, a new hair cut, a massage, a facial or even just having your eyebrows done will give your self-confidence a real lift.

7. Get moving

Regular exercise has benefits besides getting your body in shape. The blood pumping through your veins will give your skin a healthy glow and you’ll feel energized too. If the gym isn’t your thing, try a brisk walk to work, or take up a martial arts or dance class.

8. Breathe

If you’re stressed or anxious, tension can build up in your body and show on your face and in your posture. An easy way to alleviate these stress signals is to practice this simple breathing exercise a few times a day. Close your eyes, place your hands by your sides and slowly breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. Repeat three or four times. Finish off by doing a few neck and shoulder rolls to loosen up those tension carrying muscles.

9. Eat well

Make sure your diet contains a variety of ‘good mood foods’. Sweets and chocolate will give you a short term burst of energy before your blood sugar levels start to dip and you start feeling lethargic and irritable – so not a good look. Aim to eat a combination of starchy energising foods such as wholegrain bread, fresh fruit, vegetables and pulses, but allow yourself junk food treats from time to time.

10. Get sensual

Body confidence is all about feeling comfortable in your own skin. Get to know your body better through activities such as sport, dance, massage and even sex. Understanding how your body responds to music and touch is such an important step in learning to love it.
